At ISTreviso we are all language learners.
We believe that language is vital for the construction of meaning. Language should be involved in all learning that goes on as it is the most significant connecting element across the school.
We aim for our students to be proficient and effective bilingual communicators because the ability to communicate in more than one language supports the development of internationally minded individuals.
English is the primary language of instruction in our school, but as we recognize that Italian is the predominant mother tongue language we are committed to ensuring that all our students are proficient in both languages.
Our language programme follows the objectives set out in the PYP scope and sequence document, which are compatible with language objectives worldwide, including those of the Italian ministerial programme. These objectives are met in specialised language lessons and throughout the teaching and learning in the school. The development of language involves learning about language, learning through language and using language with others in everyday situations. This interlinked process is developed by means of a wide range of language learning situations across the school.
Expectations are realistic and time is given for children to learn and feel confident in both languages. Children are encouraged to speak and use English around the school as much as possible. Their attempts to communicate and make themselves understood are highly valued and positively received.
Teachers support the learning of language by creating a language rich environment, modelling correct usage, whole class work on specifi c grammar points, praise and reward schemes to continually encourage and promote the correct use of language. Recognition for particular progress in language is given through the awarding of language learner certifi cates in weekly assemblies.
The children have Italian lessons in which they study Italian language and literature, study maths and reinforce ideas from their recent PYP units of inquiry.
The hours of Italian lessons per week are as follows:
Years 1 and 2: 6x 50 minute sessions
Years 3, 4 and 5 9×50 minute sessions
