Year 2 Newsletter December 2011

Hello and welcome to our end of year newsletter. We have just finished our second Unit of Inquiry on Healthy Choices and here are few of the things that I wanted to share with you.

The children enjoyed taking part in all learning activities. They all had an opinion and shared examples of what it means to be healthy. Like our previous unit on Life Cycles some of the children brought into school books on sport and food and were able share them with the class. One of the successful elements of this unit has been the visitors that have come into class and talked about and demonstrated ideas for a healthy Lifestyle. The children were very responsive and have been carrying out some of the practices taught to them. A big thank-you to Mrs Lenard, for your inspiring yoga lesson.

In English we have been continuing to develop our phonetic sounds and looking at proper and common nouns. The children are now being encouraged to include more detail when writing sentences and to check their writing to see if it makes sense. They are given opportunities during the week to present their work and ideas in a small group to the rest of the class (this has been linked to their unit of inquiry.) I have noticed how most of them have increased in confidence when using English in class.

In Maths we have continued looking at numbers to 100 and beyond and have carried out a lot of work on time and data handling which we were lucky enough to link with our unit of inquiry. We have also been working on mental addition and subtraction sums.

The children worked tremendously hard on their class assembly and it was lovely to see so many of you supporting them by coming to it. As we draw nearer to Christmas we have been busy practising for the Christmas concert and making Christmas crafts. Thank-you to all of the Mums who gave up their time to come into class and make Christmas stockings with the children. The children enjoyed making them and got so much out of it.

Our next Unit of Inquiry is Reduce.re-use and recycle. The central idea of this unit is to understand that “people can establish practices in order to maintain and sustain the Earth’s limited resources.” The children have already been recycling their own rubbish and collecting rubbish that has been thrown in the playground during playtimes and disposing of it appropriately. Thank-you to all of those who have completed the questionnaire that was sent home to you.

I would like to end this newsletter by saying a Special Thank-you to Mrs De Crisofaro, Mrs Lazzari and Mrs Fabbrini for all of your time, hard work and effort in making the children’s costumes for the Christmas show. The children look amazing and I am sure that all of you will agree if you are able to come to see the show.

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year and I look forward to seeing you on January 9th.

Best Wishes

Miss Dumphy
